Umpire as small business

Starting out can be tough on the budget. Keep in mind that, as a small business, you deduct expenses at year’s end.

Tax forms

Which means, if you earn more than $600, roughly 20 games, you’ll get a W-4 at year’s end from the local umpire organization, taxed on the earned income.

But no worry. Simply fill out Schedule C of the 1099. There, as a small business owner, you will list the expenses of doing business as a private contractor.

Keep receipts?

Now, while it’s always good to have receipts on hand, it’s tough to get a receipt from the concession stand midst a day of yard work. Simply use a journal or a date book to document your expenses:
  • Mileage to the yard, 58 ½ cents/mile after July 1, 2008.
  • Meals—what you ate at the concession stand, what you prepared at home.
  • Liquid—88 cents/game.
  • Cell phone use—25% of the bill for contacting umpire assigner, AD, leagues, organizations.
  • Computer—scheduling games, updating profile, discussion with fellow umpires.

These and other expenses will let you recoup some of the out-of-the-pocket expenses when it's time to pay taxes.
