Above all, signals should be clear and crisp. There should be no doubt on the call. Keep the ball alive as much as possible. Everone hustles. This keeps the game moving. This also means you get the contest done within the one hour and fifty minute (1:50) time frame for the 6 or 7-inning contest.

fyi       Take your time on the call. It’s nothing until you call it.

I.                   U1's how-to for the batted ball

a.     For example, clear the catcher on the groundball chopper

                                                              i.       With a partner, U2, you are back up.

1.     Over throw to 1B, you’ve got eyes on the ball.

2.     Field umpire follows runner to 2B

                                                            ii.      No partner, get out as far as you can.

1.     Stop before the ball reaches the fielder.

2.     Let the throw take you to the play.

b.     Hearing the music of baseball

                                                              i.      Live ball at all times. Keep the game moving.

1.     Hustle when you brush the plate.

a.     From the stands, this looks like umpire hustle.

b.     Shows you’re in control, on top of the game.

2.     Do the same, foul ball down the line.

3.     Try to straddle the fair/foul line.

4.     Stop before you make the call.

5.     Behind the catcher, clap your hands every so often.

6.     Say “Batter up” if there’s a delay in the action.

a.     New batter might take too long.

b.     Tell him to keep one foot in the box.

fyi       Think of “continuing action” as  the play develops. Work to  keep alive ball.

fyi       U2 has first play in the infield. Think lead runner. U1 has second play in the infield. Think overthrow, secondary runner.

fyi       R1 at 3B, U1 stays at home base. Signals partner that he or she is staying home.
